“Increasing the Awesome: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope” By Dr. Amber Straughn
Just when you thought that we couldn’t get any better than Hubble, NASA goes and builds a telescope 100 times more powerful. Amber will tell us about building the amazing James Webb Space Telescope here on earth and the science we’ll do with it once it’s in space (2018!).
Bio: Amber Straughn is an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. When she’s not gazing longingly at the heavens (or throwing things at her computer in attempts to get code to run), Amber enjoys cooking, yoga, and flying airplanes….though not all three at once.

“It ALL starts with a trail” By Aaron J Lowe
“Trails have guided us through the past, take us through the present and lead us to the future. From tracking an animal, driving a car, to walking on the moon, trails have evolved with us and have always been an essential tool to our existence.”
Aaron Lowe is a Trails and Access Specialist with the Department of Land and Natural Resources. With over 30 years of hiking and outdoor recreation experience, Aaron has been managing all 100 miles of forestry trails on Oahu since 1995. Aaron believes that human respect for nature can start with a simple hiking trail, and wants to implement creative ways for people to enjoy, learn and respect nature.

“Nice Ash: Dealing with the Unexpected from KīlaueaVolcano” By Kendra Lynn
-Kīlauea Volcano’s modern activity is relative quiet – slow moving effusive lava flows and mild fissure or fountaining events have made this seem like an iconic, “safe” volcano. Kīlauea’s eruptive behavior in the not-too-distant past, however, was drastically different and in some cases, life threatening…
Bio: Kendra is a 3rd year Ph.D. student studying Kīlauea Volcano (HI) in the department of Geology and Geophysics at UH Manoa and has a Bachelor’s of Science in Geology from Winona State University, MN.

“Are Zoo Elephants Happy?” By Kathy Carlstead
Abstract: Some critics say that elephants shouldn’t be kept in zoos because zoos can’t meet their needs. Applied animal behavior scientists study the factors impacting zoo animal well-being, with the goal of improving their care and conditions. A large study of elephants in North American zoos will be discussed, and I will present the specific results about the important relationships between keepers and elephants.

Bio: Dr. Kathy Carlstead is the former director of Research and Conservation at the Honolulu Zoo Society. She has studied welfare of zoo animals for over 30 years.

“Feeding behavior of skates and rays” By Samantha Mulvany

Sam did some work on the anatomy of batoids (skates and rays) and how that relates to the way they feed.  Some rays have lobes on their head that aid during feeding, while others lack these lobes.  She investigated a range of species with and without lobes to determine if there were any differences in the way that they feed.
Sam recently graduated from the University of South Florida with a PhD in Biology.

“The Hawaiian Monk Seal History Mystery,” Dr. Charles Littnan

Hawaiian monk seals are one of the most endangered seals on the planet, and endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. But where did they come from, how long have they been here, and are they really native? A few say they aren’t and thus shouldn’t be saved. Genetics, archaeology, and Hawaiian traditional cultural knowledge each give us a glimpse into monk seals’ past, and will hopefully help us to recover their species to keep them around into the future.

“Poop-covered Mucus Balls,” Jonathan Sprague

Hawai’i is a spectacularly beautiful place, with white sand beaches, towering cliffs, and unique ecosystems. However, while many of the species that call Hawai’i home are wonderfully charismatic, others are less so … until you look more closely.
