Hawaiian monk seals are one of the most endangered seals on the planet, and endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. But where did they come from, how long have they been here, and are they really native? A few say they aren’t and thus shouldn’t be saved. Genetics, archaeology, and Hawaiian traditional cultural knowledge each give us a glimpse into monk seals’ past, and will hopefully help us to recover their species to keep them around into the future.

Hawai’i is a spectacularly beautiful place, with white sand beaches, towering cliffs, and unique ecosystems. However, while many of the species that call Hawai’i home are wonderfully charismatic, others are less so … until you look more closely.

The benefits and tribulations of the towed diver survey method to count fish populations and do other marine research. Not as impressive as Laird but this tow-boarding is still pretty damn fun and effective.
