“Are Zoo Elephants Happy?” By Kathy Carlstead
Abstract: Some critics say that elephants shouldn’t be kept in zoos because zoos can’t meet their needs. Applied animal behavior scientists study the factors impacting zoo animal well-being, with the goal of improving their care and conditions. A large study of elephants in North American zoos will be discussed, and I will present the specific results about the important relationships between keepers and elephants.
Bio: Dr. Kathy Carlstead is the former director of Research and Conservation at the Honolulu Zoo Society. She has studied welfare of zoo animals for over 30 years.
